The estuaries of Devon and Cornwall, Poole Harbour and Chichester Harbour hold some of the largest concentrations and they are also common in East Anglia.

Is it rare to see an egret?

Unless you live on the water, you probably don't see a lot of egrets and herons in your backyard. These are mostly wetlands birds, made for foraging in the shallows with their long leg legs and extended necks.

Why are they called egrets?

The word "egret" comes from the French word aigrette that means both "silver heron" and "brush", referring to the long, filamentous feathers that seem to cascade down an egret's back during the breeding season (also called "egrets").

What does it mean when a white egret visits you?

Additionally, these birds are also known to represent good fortune and prosperity. The Christians believe that because of their long-suffering nature, egrets are also symbolic of gratitude and contentment. Lastly, because all egret species generally have white plumage, they also symbolize piety.
